Created for students and professionals to inspire changes in how new buildings are designed and constructed, the Self-Sufficient competition challenged participants to design a self-sufficient and ecologically oriented dwelling. In the early 20th century, the concept of "dwelling" was defined as a "machine for living", a reference to a new way of understanding the construction of inhabitable spaces that characterized the Machine Age. Today, a century later, we face the challenge of constructing a sustainable or self-sufficient dwelling, a living organism that interacts with its environment, exchanging resources, and which functions as an entirely independent entity. The Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC) has collected a selection of entries presented during its 1st Advanced Architecture Contest: Self-Sufficient Housing.

This edition of the book 'Urban green-blue grids for sustainable and dynamic cities' is a revised and updated reprint of the handbook by Hiltrud Pötz en Pierre Bleuzé.'Urban green-blue grids for sustainable and dynamic cities' is a visionary, practical and inspiring book for education and practice. Useful for developers, urban planners, landscape architects, ecologists, civil engineers and all those interested in making cities more sustainable and liveable.Half of the earths’ inhabitants live in cities, and urbanisation is only increasing. The quality of our future thus depends on the quality of our cities. Our challenge is to keep our cities and our planet liveable, safe, healthy and attractive throughout this century. Due to climate change, increasing urbanisation and the depletion of fossil fuels, cities will need to undergo a more or less gradual transition from being primarily consumers of food toward producing their own.One attractive and efficient way to guide this necessary transformation is by developing green-blue urban grids that will mitigate the effects of climate change and the energy and food shortages in urban areas. Our cities need to become more resilient to be able to tackle these challenges, as a lack of resilience will not only lead to a deficiency in technical infrastructural functioning but will also have consequences for a city’s social and economic well-being.Furthermore, green-blue urban planning will offer more room for the development of biodiversity and a healthier, more attractive living environment. This book shows the principles of sustainable urban planning and many substantial measures. About forty realized and international example projects in green-blue and sustainable urban planning demonstrate the feasibility of the principles and measures.

Most of today’s construction is based on concepts, technologies, materials, and social models, which are more than hundred years old. We hardly use the knowledge we could have today. But in view of climate change, shrinking resources of raw materials, radical demographical shifts, and increasing social inequalities resulting from the rise of neo-liberal economy, construction needs to be re-invented today more than ever.To achieve this, Re-inventing Construction presents two complementary approaches: On the one hand, the book gives an overview of new construction technologies, material research, energy concepts, as well as ownership models and development strategies in architecture. On the other hand, it rediscovers the wisdom of vernacular architecture with its smart use of locally available building materials, building methods and typologies, as well as the ingenious understanding of natural principles.Wiping off the dust of any quaint technocratic allure formerly associated with construction, this book celebrates its re-invention with an effervescent effort of research, produced by 38 international architects, engineers, and scholars who contributed a kaleidoscopic set of essays and case studies. In addition, the book features a lavishly illustrated index containing more than 230 dictionary entries that take the reader on an eye-opening journey across the expanding universe of construction. With contributions by Anne Lacaton & Jean-Philippe Vassal, Bjarke Ingels, Michel Rojkind, Werner Sobek, Keller Easterling, Michael Sorkin, Amory Lovins, Elinor Ostrom, Jeremy Rifkin and many others.

"Three hundred years ago, intellectuals of the European Enlightenment constructed a mythology of technology. Influenced by a confluence of humanism, colonialism, and racism, this mythology ignored local wisdom and indigenous innovation, deeming it primitive. Today, we have slowly come to realize that the legacy of this mythology is haunting us. Designers understand the urgency of reducing humanity's negative environmental impact, yet perpetuate the same mythology of technology that relies on exploiting nature. Responding to climate change by building hard infrastructures and favoring high-tech homogenous design, we are ignoring millennia-old knowledge of how to live in symbiosis with nature. Without implementing soft systems that use biodiversity as a building block, designs remain inherently unsustainable.Lo--TEK, derived from Traditional Ecological Knowledge, is a cumulative body of multigenerational knowledge, practices, and beliefs, countering the idea that indigenous innovation is primitive and exists isolated from technology. It is sophisticated and designed to sustainably work with complex ecosystems. With a foreword by anthropologist Wade Davis and four chapters spanning Mountains, Forests, Deserts, and Wetlands, this book explores thousands of years of human wisdom and ingenuity from 20 countries including Peru, the Philippines, Tanzania, Kenya, Iran, Iraq, India, and Indonesia. We rediscover an ancient mythology in a contemporary context, radicalizing the spirit of human nature."--
